Liu Wei, an artist of deep humanity, has always been holding firm to the aesthetic principles and ideals of his own. Being persistent in the exploration of both realistic and symbolic style, he spares no efforts to represent the psychological landscape and spiritual realm of modern people. A case in point is his series “Individuals”, which shows his deep sympathy and great concern for the vulnerable groups.

Attached to naivety and simplicity, Mr. Liu’s works seem to be ever more precious in the current tide of urbanization. In his series of paintings entitled Childhood, Mr. Liu intentionally gives up the maturity a painting should have, and treats painting with a child’s passion and understanding. The stories in these paintings are told in such a simple way that it gives us a sense of refreshment and detachment.

After graduation from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and in the face of new job and life, Liu Wei still sticks to his innermost sense of humanity, distances himself from fame and fortune, and keeps up cheerful spirits in artistic creation. Paying close attention to what is going on around him from a unique point of view, Liu depicts the seemingly trivial things such as the city slums, the faces of migrant workers, the arid lands, and the like, which turn out to reflect a series of problems in the process of social change. In comparison with his prior works, these works without doubt gain new breakthroughs.

A close inspection of his artistic works, including his Childhood Series, Individual Series and his latest Slum Series as well, reveals that, although living in modern city going through rapid development, Liu never fails to maintain an independent spirit of introspection. He never forgets to heal up the schism of city life with his canvas and stitch up the fragments of this era with his paints, drawing  people's attention naturally towards contemporary urban and rural societies.

In brief, through his unique artistic language, Liu remains committed to his choice and ideal and build his own spiritual home in the form of his art. With his wonderful works and his persistent artistic pursuit, Liu bears living evidence to the mottos “No pain, No gain” and “Rome is not built in one day”.
